August development log

  Posted by: katos - 08-19-2017, 04:43 PM - Replies (3)

Updates for the month of August:

  • Years of service - Updated post info to display length of service for users.
  • Updated user info - Updated user panel on posts to clean up the "posts, rep and user details" section.
  • Myreactions made responsive to suit the theme better - My Reactions no longer overlap the container box, and cause scrolling.
  • Copy/paste copyright added.  - "Read more at Creators Wave" Text now appears on copy-paste.
  • Myalerts icons updated. - Changed icons to FontAwesome, and have aligned these properly in the settings menu as they were overlapping and causing issues.
  • Editted error.css to better suit the theme. - Error.css no longer appears yellow and out-of-place. This is now the same colour gray as the rest of the site, allowing it to blend in more visually. Thanks to @Suraf for the suggestion.
  • Editted Bugtracker to fix access permissions - Members and Moderators no longer see an error on attempting to access the page. Guests are unable to view our bugtracker.
  • Updated ranks across the site - Updated ranks with a clean and minimal image.
  • Disaster recovery policy updated and circulated to required parties. - Updated information for contacts, what to do, and damage mitigation. This is a sensitive document as it contains information related to backend systems, and as such will not be publically shared.
  • Social Sharing updated to ensure correct social integration - Needs further work to integrate Opengraph and ensure that image / title displays properly across Facebook and Twitter.
  • Imgur image upload integrated, and working. - Needs further work to ensure that the icon displays correctly.
  • Caching updated - Fixed errors on the board & lengthened the cache time to improve performance.
  • Moved back to Cloudflare from Shovl after multiple errors - After Multiple issues with Shovl, and it -frankly- annoying staff members, we decided to move back to Cloudflare.
  • Integrated uptime monitoring - Uptime of the site is monitored and reported to staff members through Email and Slack integration. We will look in the future to add more staff members to this integration, so that the site can be monitored (and fixed) around the clock.
  • Graphical statistics - Graphical representation of the site statistics, to keep the site more modern and professional.
  • Featured posts - Featuring posts to appear on the front page, so that we can recognise and reward those who make exceptional threads such as tutorials or outstanding work in the showcase sections.
  • Username styles - Updating username styles to reflect the updated rank images.
  • Privacy policy update - Updating the privacy policy and pushing this to our site. Needs updating to reflect information collected for analytical use (Google Analytics).
  • Security policy - Updating the security policy to note how we manage site security and personal data. Will likely be a blog post as part of our transparency.
  • Staff postbit - Staff badge or colouring on posts, to help users quickly identify important staff posts.
  • Blog - An upcoming blog that will host interviews, tutorials, update news, maintenance news, downtime information, and more.
  • Status page - A status page that can be used to ensure that our systems are online. If they are down, we will post information related to issues here whilst we work on them. A full report will then be posted on our blog once we're back online.
  • Custom 404 Page - A custom 404 page to make the site more appealing and professional.
  • Banned members page

Petya ransomware: How to make sure you're safe

  Posted by: Suraf - 07-07-2017, 08:31 AM - Replies (2)

A month ago, it was the "WannaCry" ransomware wreaking havoc over the internet, and now this month another ransomware exploit is rapidly expanding all over Europe which started with companies in Ukraine. The new ransomware is known as "Petya", which uses the same SMBv1 exploit that WannaCry uses to rapidly replicate throughout network systems, but holds infected computers hostage in a significantly different way.

Petya does not encrypt files one by one in its attempt to elicit those Bitcoin payments, like WannaCry does, but uses an even more egregious method:

Quote:Instead, Petya reboots victims computers and encrypts the hard drive’s master file table (MFT) and rendering the master boot record (MBR) inoperable, restricting access to the full system by seizing information about file names, sizes, and location on the physical disk. Petya replaces the computer’s MBR with its own malicious code that displays the ransom note and leaves computers unable to boot.

Microsoft issued a series of patches for this type of exploit back in April, including taking the unusual step of patching the unsupported Windows XP operating system. So if you're always up-to-date, you should be okay and not have to worry about a thing. However, the company also recommends removing the unused but vulnerable SMBv1 file sharing protocol from your systems.

What is the SMB File Sharing?
Quote:SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support - this feature enables the sharing of files and printers with computers running older versions of Windows, ranging from Windows NT 4.0 up to Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 R2. The Server Message Block (SMB) protocol may be used by other operating systems like Linux or OS X to communicate with Windows devices.

Other than that, it is rather pointless and not needed for the average users. Want to disable it? Here's how you do it.

For Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 Wrote:
  1. Open the Control Panel (search for it with Cortana)
  2. Click Programs and Features, and then on the left-hand column
  3. Click Turn Windows Features on or off
  4. Scroll down to SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing support,
  5. Uncheck it, and reboot

Running an older version of Windows? Please check this Microsoft page for more details on disabling on Windows 7.

Stay safe out there!
